Even the most expensive washing and best brand name washing machines can struggle from time to time. The banging noises caused from an unbalanced washing machine are often both unsettling and annoying. Thankfully they are usually an easy fix and don't require any specialty tools, knowledge, or professional attention. The steps below detail how to check your washing machine for level as well as how to balance it if it is out of level.

1. Ensure Floor is Level

To balance your washing machine, begin by placing your washing machine on a flat and stable surface. Hard and even ground is always best.

2.                       Adjust the Feet

Start by gently pushing and pulling the machine from each corner to see it tips or rock in one or more directions. For example if you pull forward lightly from the back of the machine and it rocks forward one or more of the front legs needs to be adjusted. This can be done by tilting the machine slightly to access the legs and unscrewing them (turning left) by hand to make longer or turning right to make them shorter. Repeat process and adjust legs as necessary to help ensure a properly balanced machine.

3.                       Use a Level

To ensure precise leveling, place a bubble or digital level on top of the washing machine. This will help you determine if the machine is perfectly level in both directions. If the Machine is not level or at least very close to level adjust the feet using the methods from step 2 and re-check level adjusting feet until desired level is achieved. Once feet are in desired position be sure to tighten the lock nuts or located on the studs to ensure feet maintain desire position.

4.                       Load Washing Machine Evenly

An often overlooked aspect of balancing a washing machine is how you load your laundry. Properly distributing the clothes inside the drum plays a significant role in preventing imbalance. Avoid placing all the heavy items on one side of the drum, as this can lead to uneven weight distribution and an off-balance spin cycle.

5.                       Mix Heavy and Light Items

When loading your washing machine, consider mixing heavy and light items. This strategic arrangement helps distribute weight evenly throughout the drum. For instance, instead of washing a single heavy item like a comforter, balance it out by adding a few lighter garments. This practice contributes to a smoother and quieter spin cycle.

6.                       Use a Balancing Kit

Some washing machine models come with a balancing kit specifically designed to further stabilize the machine during operation. If your machine comes with such a kit refer to manufacturers instructions for use.

7.                       Due Diligence

Balancing isn't a one-time task; it requires periodic checks to maintain the stability of your washing machine. Always re-level when moving the machine to a new location and periodically repeat the steps above to ensure your washing machine lasts as long as possible.
